Well we're back from Deutchland, and we had a great time. It was a somewhat unusual vacation for a number of reasons:

* The southern region of Germany, Bavaria, is an incredible living storybook land. In all the villages it looked like a family of lawn gnomes or Snow White or something would just step out the front door of their quaint cottage and say "Gutten tag!"

* Attending a real European football (soccer) match -- Karlsrue vs. Wolfsberg -- was an experience I'll never forget. Thousands of fans chanting official team cheers from the moment the game started 'til beyond the end was amazing. And it was a real knuckle-biter of a game, too!

* Ten days spent in one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world and nary a wireless hot spot. Was is das?

* One of the things this trip was about was beer. Lots of beer. Three of the people traveling with us wanted to try every German beer they could, we spent the night in guest-brewhouses (basically a B&B or hotel with a brewery), and then of course there was...

* Oktoberfest. Every stereotype you have of Oktoberfest (men in lederhose, women in derndles, large-bosomed women carrying 8 1-liter beer steins, people dancing on the benches to corny oompah music, drunken revelry on an incredibly massive scale -- every one of these is utterly, completely true. I'll post pictures of it all soon (including one or two "that man should never have worn laderhose that short" photos).

Although the vacation flowed slower than I would have preferred (some of the folks in our crowd weren't fast movers so we probably only saw half the stuff I would have on an ordinary vacation) the company was a great deal of fun and there were a number of enchanting surprises. Now it's good to be home, doing laundry, and catching up on the interschnitzl.
