Introducing... Google Maps
Feb. 8th, 2005 08:52 amI've had to bite my tongue on this one for a while, but finally I can shout to the world. Ever gone online for a map or driving directions? I'd like to show all of you the best mapping website in the world, Google Maps.
Ever wondered where Google Headquarters (aka the Googleplex) is? It's right here.
Take a look at the map. Bigger than you're used to seeing, right? Also much, much cleaner and very easy to read.
Now click on the map, hold down your mouse button, and drag around. Really, go ahead, I'll wait.
See, is this not nifty?
Maps are nice, but what you really want is driving directions. OK, let's say you want to join me tonight at Rosie McCann's Pub for the South Bay Ceili (beginners welcome, no cover, live band!). Go back to the Google Maps homepage and enter 'Rosie McCann's, San Jose' in one of the 'Find a business' fields, then click 'Search.' You should get a map that looks like this.
Hmm, it seems like there are a few places that might be what you're looking for within driving distance of San Jose. Looking at the list on the right side, however, it seems like Choice A is the most likely candidate. Click on Choice A and you'll get a flag that includes a link to the Rosie McCann's Irish Pub website so you can double-check that's the place you're headed to.
Now click on the 'Directions: to here' link. Enter your starting address (I'll use the Googleplex again) and you might get a map that looks like this.
You can click on any stage of those driving directions to get a close up view. Want to know how to get home? Click on the 'Reverse directions' link. Want to send these directions to a friend or put them on a webpage or blog entry? Copy the link from 'Link to this page.'
I say again: is this not nifty?
You can find Google Maps by visiting http://maps.google.com. You can also navigate to it from the Google homepage by clicking on the 'more' link, then on 'Google Labs' where you'll find Google Maps along with several other Google services in beta.
