I had a good phone screening yesterday with a Google recruiter. Muchas gracias to
capricious_k for giving me the hearty recommendation. By the way,
furycom's recommendation for the previous job I applied to there is still attached to my file, huzzah!
The poor gal was on back to back phone calls all day and in the middle of her lunch when she called me. She was happy to discover that the last time I had a phone screening with Google the screener had taken extensive notes, so she didn't have to ask half the questions she ordinarily would. We seemed to get along well, and she seemed to have a good handle on who I was and what I'm capable of.
She hadn't yet been told the specifics of what type of people she was supposed to be hiring, but was hoping to hear that by last night; she was digging around a bit to see if I had any special qualities she could "sell," like expertise in HTML or JavaScript (which I also don't have). It sounds like they might need some warm bodies to fill fill seats though. Warm, intelligent, technically capable, communicative, Googlesque bodies -- and I certainly think I qualify in that regard.
The recruiter emailed me a do-at-home test to complete, which was much easier than the AdWords one. If they like what they see they'll haul me in for an in-person interview (which I probably won't hear about for at least a week) and if they still like me they hire me as a contractor. I'll let y'all know when I've heard more.
