Telephonic misconnections
Apr. 8th, 2004 12:06 pmI had the strangest phone conversation the other day. It was early evening, and I called my friend D up to wish her a happy birthday. She'd been out of town celebrating it with her family. (Names and phone numbers changed to protect the innocent.)
D: Hello?
Me: (Thinking her voice sounds a little strange) Hi, is D there?
D: Speaking.
Me: Oh hi D. It's Paul. I just called to wish you a happy birthday!
D: Thanks!
Me: How was the celebration?
D: Oh, pretty good.
Me: And how was your visit home to your parents?
D: Huh? I didn't go home. We just stayed around here and hung out.
Me: You didn't? I thought you said you were when I saw you last week.
D: No, I stayed around the apartment. Wait, who is this?
Me: Paul.
D: Ummm, I don't know a Paul.
Me: Is this D. Smith?
D: No, this is D. Jones.
Me: Did I dial 555-1219?
D: No, you dialed 555-1216.
Me: Was your birthday yesterday?
D: No, it was Friday!
Me: The D I was calling had her birthday yesterday! What a weird coincidence!!
D: I'll say! I was really confused!
Me: Me too. Well, umm, D... happy birthday!
D: Thank you!
We both had a good laugh, and I apologized. Then I gave my D a call, carefully dialing the correct number. The real D and I had another good laugh as I told her the story of what just happened!
