This Saturday myself,
capricious_k, and
fresne are departing for a two week vacation we're calling "The Great White North trip." I'm really looking forward to it.
We're spending the first week on the Rocky Mountaineer train, taking the train from Vancouver, up the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies to Jasper, then (on a brief hop on a bus) down to Lake Louise and Banff before we train back to Vancouver. Everyone I've mentioned this trip to has either said "Ooooo, that sounds like fun" or "I've done that, and it's completely fantastic!"
After our rail loop, we're hopping on the Norwegian Sun and taking a one week cruise up the Alaskan Inside Passage, with stops in Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. We're really splurging on this one, and have planned excursions that even include taking a helicopter ride over some of Alaska's glaciers. I've never been in a helicopter before, and doing so is on my "list of things to do before I die."
Funny thing about the Alaska cruise, my family actually did a very similar one when I was a boy and though it was fun, we all swore we'd never do something like that again because it wasn't really our vacation style. I guess I'll be breaking that oath now. :-)
The other reason this is our Alaska/Canada experiment is because we're all checking to see how well the three of us travel together over an extended period of time.
capricious_k and I have already verified that we enjoy extended trips together, and obviously
fresne and
capricious_k have traveled together many times, but the three of us have never done more than a couple of nights together. What will happen? Will it be the trip of our lives? Or will we kill each other? No matter which way it goes, there's guaranteed to be big mountains, and maybe a bald eagle or two.
I expect my internet access will be limited, so I'll be reconnecting at the end of the month.
