I've lived in Cupertino for a little over a year now, but I'd done a poor job of exploring the area. Last weekend I went for a spontaneous drive, and stumbled across the Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve. It looked luscious and green and inviting, but I wanted to share the experience of hiking it and [livejournal.com profile] capricious_k was out of town.

Yesterday we got our chance. The weather was great, and we both wanted to test our new cameras (I just got a Cannon PowerShot A720), so off we went for trek through the local hills. It was important that we not get eaten by mountain lions; fortunately this trail sign provided detailed instructions with universally understandable icons about what to do during a mountain lion encounter:

I'm not really into flowers, but I do love the California state flower, the orange poppy. They're in full bloom right now, and it looked like a good chance to test my camera's macro function.

The hike we chose was about a 5 mile walk through oak forests and green fields. The park is clearly very popular, because we were sharing the trails with lots of other folks. Many of the views were gorgeous.

I've always loved all the open space preserves in the hills between me and the Pacific Ocean. I can see I'll be spending a lot of time at Rancho San Antonio.
