Car musings
Nov. 5th, 2005 12:48 pmIt's time for me to buy a new car. I've visited the website for every car manufacturer, as well as read tons of online reviews. Just about every single car I see on the road looks pretty much the same to me -- boring; Camerys look like Accords look like Jettas look like... well, you get the idea. I've recently managed to narrowed it down to three choices:
TOYOTA PRIUS
Pros - amazing mileage, geeky, spacious, nice features, my job gives me $5000 if I buy one.
Cons - not exciting to drive (it's just not zippy), massive blind spot, not available with manual transmission (duh, since it's a hybrid), pricy even though subsidized by my company.
SUBARU OUTBACK WAGON
Pros - I've wanted one for years, spacious plus tons of cargo space, sporty yet rugged.
Cons - sucky gas mileage, I'm not crazy about the latest body style, not currently available in my preferred colors, pricey.
SCION tC
Pros - Sexy look, gazillions of options, extremely affordable, great mileage, ultra-cool.
Cons - not significantly bigger than my current Honda.
In the end, I think I've nixed the Prius because, well, it's just not fun to drive, even though it's amazingly practical. I had my heart set on an Outback, but the current models just don't quite turn me on enough, and the prospect of a car getting 24 mph in the city is frightening. Both the Outback and the Prius, however, are the right size.
The Scion is a sexy beast. It's the only car I see on the road that makes my go "Oooooooooo!" every time I see one. Basically a dream car at half the price I'd be willing to pay, with one major exception: it's really just about the same size as my Civic, and I'm interested in buying a bigger car this time around.
What to do? What to do?
