A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life;
Whose misadventur’d piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents’ strife.
Romeo and Juliet
Finally, months behind the rest of the world, Cartoon Network has run the final episodes of Justice League, a three-parter entitled Starcrossed. The episode's title refers to the arrival of Hawkgirl's people, and the effect that has on both Earth and Hawkgirl's relationship with Green Lantern. Although the art quality was a bit behind several other outstanding episodes from earlier this season, the plot was top-notch. Right up there with Twilight of the Gods and Hearts and Minds (but not quite as good as A Better World -- nothing will ever be quite as good as that ep).
It's ironic that Cartoon Network ran this set of episodes so far behind the rest of the world while K & C are in England (where the episodes aired oh, back in February or something). As always I want to dissect the symbolism, meaning, and ramifications of the story with them over a nice bottle of wine. That chat will have to wait for a few days until they're back.
I did mention above that these are the final episodes of Justice League. Fear not! The series is being relaunched soon with the new title Justice League Unlimited. With the fallout from tonight's episode there's a somewhat obvious need for the Justice League to expand their membership, and starting in a couple of months we'll get to see many more of the DC stable step up to fight for truth and justice.
Asides: It's always funny to to see me go off on this series considering I'm much more of a Marvel Comics fan -- I've got enough X-Men comics to choke a large heard of goats, for example. Also, as always, whenever I watch Justice League I get a huge hankerin' to play Mutants and Masterminds, so I'll probably go stare at those books for a while this evening before I go to bed. Fortunately the M&M Annual #1 will be in stores soon to feed my need.
