The Google Test
Jan. 9th, 2004 12:14 pmI've just finished step two in my pursuit of a new career at Google. As part of their screening process for the AdWords department Google sent me a little test to fill out. I wasn't allowed to talk to Google employees for help, but I was allowed to use Google's site and the web to research my answers.
At first the thing seemed basic and simple. But as I got into it I realized that there were layers and layers of complexity. I really had to pay attention. I really had to do a ton of research. I really had to think, and I really had to generate my own opinions. I even had to do a little math. There were multiple trick questions. Very clever of them!
It's obvious through both the phone screening and the test that Google isn't just hiring trained monkeys to fill even the basic position I'm applying for. They want intelligence, they want quality, and they want people who will fit in to the Google culture. They're already testing me at every level to see if I'll fit.
I know I will. Now I just need to consistently demonstrate that to them.
Now I wait for them to review my test, and for someone to determine if my performance on it combined with the impressions I gave in the phone screening warrant them calling me in for a sit-down interview. My confidence level is high; I'll let you all know how it goes when I hear back from them.
